The Houston Robotics Community

Houston's robotics scene isn't only companies and labs — it's also a thriving grassroots community of makers, students, hobbyists, and engineers who build robots together. These are the clubs, makerspaces, and programs where you can show up, get hands-on, and find your people. Most are free or low-cost and welcome all skill levels.

Maker & Hobbyist Communities

Houston Robotics Group

One of the largest community robotics groups in Texas (3,000+ on Meetup). Meets every Saturday, 2–5 PM at TXRX Labs in the East End. Bring a project — robots, drones, electronics, AI, automation — or just show up to learn. Free, all ages, all skill levels; beginners can borrow a starter kit.

TXRX Labs

Houston's largest makerspace, at the East End Maker Hub (6501 Navigation Blvd). Members get access to laser cutters, CNC routers, 3D printers, welding, and full electronics labs — plus workforce-training programs. The home base for much of the city's hands-on robotics activity.

Houston AI Club

A community meetup for AI and machine-learning enthusiasts — increasingly relevant as robotics and AI converge. Talks, demos, and networking for practitioners and the curious alike.

Student & Competitive Robotics

FIRST Robotics Championship

Houston hosts the FIRST Championship — the world's largest student robotics competition — through 2034, drawing tens of thousands of students from around the globe each spring. The on-ramp for the next generation of roboticists.

University Robotics Clubs

The University of Houston and Rice University both host active student robotics organizations, alongside formal programs like UH's space-systems and robotics research. A pathway from classroom to competition to career.

Institutions & Research Anchors

Houston's largest robotics institutions — the public and research anchors whose work underpins much of the regional ecosystem.

NASA Johnson Space Center

Houston's human-spaceflight center and one of the most advanced robotics labs on earth — home to Robonaut, the Valkyrie humanoid, and Astrobee, and a major talent engine feeding the city's commercial robotics sector.

Texas Medical Center

The largest medical complex in the world and a leading proving ground for surgical and clinical robotics, spanning institutions like Houston Methodist and MD Anderson — plus a hub for medical-robotics startups.

Training & Workforce

Houston Community College — AI & Robotics

HCC Southwest runs hands-on AI, robotics, and automation training — including a Bachelor of Applied Technology in AI & Robotics — building the technician and operations workforce for the region's robotics employers.

Run a robotics group we should list?
