Corrosion under insulation, or CUI, is the kind of problem that keeps refinery reliability engineers up at night. Water seeps beneath a pipe's insulation jacket and quietly eats the steel underneath — invisible from the outside, and shielded by the very material installed to protect it. It's one of the leading causes of unplanned shutdowns and leaks in the process industries. Finding it traditionally means erecting scaffolding, stripping insulation, and sending people up to look. Houston's ARIX Technologies built a robot to do it instead.

What ARIX Built

ARIX's flagship platform, VENUS, is a mobile robot that attaches to a pipe and travels along it, scanning for wall loss and corrosion without removing the insulation and without scaffolding. The robot handles the climbing and the data collection; ARIX's software turns those scans into a picture of where a pipe is thinning and how fast.

The economics are what make it compelling. Scaffolding alone can dominate the cost of an inspection campaign, and stripping and re-insulating pipe is slow and disruptive. A robot that crawls the line and inspects through the insulation collapses that cost — which means operators can inspect more pipe, more often, instead of sampling a small fraction and hoping the rest is fine. More coverage means catching problems before they become leaks or shutdowns.

The Company

ARIX was founded in Houston in 2017 by Dianna Liu, and has raised roughly $21.5 million to date from investors including AlleyCorp and Benson Capital Partners. Its customer list is a strong signal of technical credibility for a company of its size: Shell, Saudi Aramco, Con Edison, and NASA have all worked with ARIX. The company has also expanded its robotic inspection beyond oil and gas into adjacent sectors including wastewater — and recently launched a global partner program to widen access to robotic corrosion inspection through third-party service providers.

That partner-program move is a familiar scaling pattern in industrial robotics: rather than growing a services organization big enough to serve every plant in the world, put the robots in the hands of the inspection companies that are already there.

Why It's a Houston Company

ARIX exists in Houston for the same reason the region's subsea-robotics cluster does: the customers and the hardest version of the problem are here. The Gulf Coast holds one of the world's densest concentrations of refining and petrochemical infrastructure — and with it, an enormous quantity of insulated piping that has to be inspected on a schedule, in a humid, corrosive climate that makes CUI worse.
