Standard Bots is the challenger. The US-based company's flagship, the RO1, is a six-axis arm the company specs at 18 kg payload, 1300 mm reach, and ±0.025 mm repeatability, with no-code programming and AI-assisted adaptability. Its headline pitch is price: Standard Bots markets the RO1 at around $37,000 — which it says is roughly half the cost of a comparable Universal Robots arm — and emphasizes that it's American-made. It's newer, with a smaller install base and ecosystem, but it's moving fast.
(One clarifying note: don't confuse Standard Bots with a separate Chinese company named 'Standard Robots' that makes autonomous mobile robots — different company, different product.)
How to Actually Compare Them
Rather than trust either company's marketing, evaluate against the factors that determine whether a cobot succeeds on your floor:
- Payload and reach. Start here — it's a hard requirement. Match the arm to the heaviest part and the farthest point it must reach, with margin. UR's lineup lets you size precisely across a wide range; the RO1 targets the popular mid-range where most machine-tending and palletizing tasks live.
- Ecosystem and integration. This is Universal Robots' biggest advantage. The UR+ certified-accessory ecosystem and the large network of experienced UR integrators mean almost any gripper, vision system, or application has a proven, supported path. Standard Bots leans the other way — a more all-in-one, no-code package intended to reduce the need for a systems integrator at all. Which you prefer depends on whether you want maximum flexibility or maximum simplicity.
- Price and total cost of ownership. Standard Bots wins on sticker price, and that's a real advantage — but compare total cost, not just the arm. Factor in grippers and accessories, integration labor, training, support contracts, and expected lifespan. A cheaper arm that needs more custom integration can erase its price advantage; an all-in-one that fits your task can compound it.
- Programming and ease of use. Both aim to be easy. UR's Polyscope interface is mature and backed by abundant training material and a huge user community. Standard Bots pushes a no-code, AI-assisted approach designed to get non-experts productive fast. For a first-time cobot buyer with no automation staff, that ease matters; for a shop that already runs URs, ecosystem familiarity matters more.
- Track record and support risk. Universal Robots has tens of thousands of arms deployed over nearly two decades — a proven-reliability and long-term-support story that's hard to match. Standard Bots is early, which cuts both ways: less of a track record, but often more responsive, hungry support and rapid iteration. For a mission-critical line, incumbency is reassuring; for a pilot or a cost-sensitive first project, the challenger is tempting.
The Honest Bottom Line
Universal Robots is the safe, proven, ecosystem-rich choice you'll rarely get fired for picking — at a premium price. Standard Bots is the cheaper, modern, no-code challenger that can deliver more arm for the money if its ecosystem and support fit your needs — with the risk that comes with a younger company.
